The single biggest problem...
“First, have a definite, clear practical ideal; a goal, an objective. Second, have the necessary means to achieve your ends; wisdom, money, materials, and methods. Third, adjust all your means to that end.” — Aristotle
“The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.” — George Bernard Shaw
“The most important thing in communication is hearing what isn’t said.” — Peter Drucker
With three decades guiding organisations through complex projects and change initiatives, I’ve seen time and again how these timeless truths apply:
Clear goals — Like Aristotle states, without a defined objective you wander. In every project I lead I begin with “what success looks like”, who owns it, and why it matters.
Means to achieve — Wisdom (experience + judgement), resources (budget, time, people), materials & methods (tools, process, systems). As a Business Systems Analyst, I’ve bridged business strategy with technical capability to ensure every means is aligned.
Adjust everything to the objective — Projects rarely go exactly to plan: scope shifts, new information emerges, stakeholder perspectives evolve. The difference between average and great performance is the ability to pivot all your means toward the end goal.
And communication — oh, the linchpin of everything:
Too often, teams think they have communicated when they really haven’t — echoing Shaw’s caution.
And as Drucker highlights: the real message lies in what’s unsaid. Listening, reading between the lines, sensing stakeholder moods, uncovering underlying assumptions — that’s the difference between a deliverable and a transformative result.
Because here’s the deal: I don’t just deliver projects; I shepherd change. I ensure the business systems behind strategy actually propel the organisation forward, not hold it back. I’ve learned to lead with clarity, equip with purpose, and adapt with agility.
So, if you’re looking for a Project / Change / Systems lead who:
• sets clear end-goals and aligns the entire team toward them
• ensures the right resources and methods are in place
• actively listens and reads what isn’t being said
• adapts dynamically when the landscape shifts
…then we should talk. Let’s ensure your next strategic initiative isn’t “just another project”, but a defining success.
